Handmade rugs are often seen as high-maintenance, but when made with the right materials and cared for correctly, they are surprisingly easy to clean and maintain.
What Are Handmade Rugs Made Of?

How to Clean a Handmade Rug After a Spill
If you’re wondering whether you can wash a handmade rug after a spill, spot cleaning is usually all that’s needed.
For everyday spills:
- Apply Dry Wonder directly to the affected area
- Lightly rub it into the rug using a soft cloth
- Allow the product to dry completely
- Use a flathead vacuum to remove the residue
This method works well for most fresh spills and helps prevent stains from settling into the fibres.
How to Clean a Handmade Rug with Set-In Stains

Shedding Is Normal with Handmade Wool Rugs
Because wool is a natural fibre, some shedding is completely normal during the first few weeks after manufacturing. This will reduce over time.
To avoid excess fluff:
- Do not use brushes or brushware
- Avoid hard or stiff bristles
- Vacuum gently using a flathead attachment only
We recommend avoiding brushware when cleaning the rugs. Brushware, unfortunately, will disrupt the fibres and cause excess fluff.
Sunlight, Furniture Marks, and General Rug Care
When placing your handmade rug in direct sunlight, rotate it regularly. Like all natural products, wool will fade over time if exposed to the sun for long periods.
If furniture leaves dents in the rug:
- Remove the furniture
- Vacuum the indented area
- Allow the rug to rest
- Rotate the rug before placing furniture back on top
This helps the fibres recover and keeps wear even across the surface.
